Conversion of Glucose to Fructose

Aldohexose to Ketohexose Transformation

The conversion of an aldose (like D-Glucose) to an isomeric ketose (like D-Fructose) is performed through the formation of an osazone intermediate.

The Osazone Method Mechanism

  1. Osazone Formation: The aldose reacts with an excess of phenylhydrazine to form the corresponding osazone.
  2. Hydrolysis: The osazone is hydrolyzed using dilute HCl to produce an osone.
  3. Reduction: The osone is selectively reduced using Zinc (Zn) and glacial acetic acid to yield the corresponding isomeric ketose.
