Wolfrom's method is a specialized chemical process used to transform an aldose (like D-Arabinose) into the next higher ketose (like D-Fructose). This involves chain elongation through a series of specific transformations.

Process Mechanism

  1. Oxidation: The aldose is oxidized into the corresponding aldonic acid using bromine water.
  2. Acetylation: The product is acetylated with acetic anhydride.
  3. Acid Chloride Formation: Treatment with thionyl chloride converts the acid into the corresponding acid chloride.
  4. Diazomethane Reaction: The acid chloride is treated with diazomethane, followed by heating with aqueous acetic acid.
  5. Deacetylation: Finally, alkaline hydrolysis removes the acetyl groups to yield the higher ketone.
