Differences Between Microemulsions and Macroemulsions


Microemulsion vs. Macroemulsion

Emulsions are biphasic systems consisting of two immiscible liquids, usually oil and water. While they might look similar to the naked eye at times, their internal physics and stability are worlds apart.

Summary

The most significant difference lies in energy. A microemulsion forms because the system actually prefers to be in that state—it's at its lowest energy level. A macroemulsion, however, is constantly trying to separate back into oil and water; it only stays "mixed" because the surfactants act as a temporary barrier against gravity and chemistry.
