Liniments vs. Lotions: Key Differences
While both liniments and lotions are liquid or semi-liquid preparations intended for external application to the skin, they serve very different therapeutic purposes and require different application techniques.
| Feature | Liniments | Lotions |
|---|---|---|
| Application Method | Must be applied with friction (rubbed into the skin). | Usually applied without friction (dabbed or spread lightly). |
| Vehicle (Base) | Oily or alcoholic (helps in penetration). | Aqueous (water-based) or thin oil-in-water emulsions. |
| Purpose | Used to relieve pain, stiffness, or as a counter-irritant. | Used for soothing, cooling, or antiseptic purposes. |
| Skin Integrity | Never applied to broken or bruised skin (due to irritation). | Can often be applied to broken or inflamed skin. |
| Examples | Turpentine liniment, Camphor liniment. | Calamine lotion, Salicylic acid lotion. |
Important Note: Liniments are formulated to penetrate deep into the tissues to provide heat or stimulation, which is why rubbing is essential. In contrast, lotions are meant to stay primarily on the surface to provide a protective or cooling effect.
