Chichibabin Reaction

Chichibabin reaction is a method for producing 2-aminopyridine by the reaction of pyridine with sodium amide. The Chichibabin reaction is a nucleophilic substitution on the pyridine ring, the 2nd and 6th positions are therefore favoured over the other positions.

Mechanism of Chichibabin Reaction

The possible mechanism is given below-
The mechanism involves the nucleophilic substitution of pyridine and is start with the attack of nucleophile at 2nd position of pyridine followed by the loss of hydride ion and subsquent eleimination of hydrogen results the sodium salt of 2-aminopyridine. Salt of 2-Aminopyridine on hydrolysis gives 2-aminopyridine.
