Magnetic Criteria for Type of Bonding

Magnetic data are often used to distinguish between ionic and covalent bonding. Magnetic moment of [Fe(CN)₆]⁻³ indicated the presence of one unpaired electron whereas, that of [FeF₆]⁻³ indicates the presence of five unpaired electrons. Obviously the nature of bonding in former is covalent and in the latter is ionic.
