Eight recemates with the santonin structure are feasible. Out of these racemates α- and β-santonins occurs in nature. α- and β- santonins are epimer at C-11 position. α -santonin has (S) configuration at C-11 and β-santonin has (R) configuration.
Santonin is a drug extracted from various species of Artemesia which is widely used in the past as an anthelminthic. The unopened flower heads of Artemisia maritima var. stechmanniana are the source of santonica. It is an organic compound consisting of colorless flat prisms, turning slightly yellow from the action of light and soluble in alcohol, chloroform and boiling water.
