Chemistry Question Answer
Chemistry Question Answer

The simultaneous eigenfunctions of angular momentum operators L2 and L are
A. all of 2s, 2px, 2py and 2pz orbitals
B. only 2s, 2px and 2py orbitals
B. only 2s and 2pz orbitals
B. only 2pz orbitals

[CSIR:NET/JRF June-2016]

2px and 2py are dependent on Φ and have ml = ±1
but pz is independent of Φ
So, [L2 and Lz] = 0
and ml = 0
s is also independent of Φ
So, [L2 and Lz] = 0
m = 0 and l = 0
Thus the simultaneous eigenfunctions of angular momentum operators L2 and Lz are only 2s and 2pz Orbitals
