Characteristics of Arrhenius Equation

Arrhenius Equation helps in finding the impact of energy barrier, frequency, temperature, the orientation of collisions, and presence of catalyst using the equation. Important Characteristics of Arrhenius Equation are given below-
  1. Larger the activation energy, smaller is the value of rate constant.
    K = A.e(−Ea/RT)
  2. Larger the activation energy, greater is the effect of given temperature rise on K.
    Characteristics of Arrhenius Equation
    As (KT + 10)/K will be larger for a larger value of Ea
  3. At lower temperature, increases in temperature causes more change in the value of K than the at higher temperatures.

Self-Check Quiz

Question: If the activation energy (Ea) increases, what happens to the rate constant (K)?

Click for Answer

The rate constant (K) decreases because the energy barrier is higher, making it harder for molecules to react.
